At the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, we embrace the challenge of teaching mathematics to students with a wide variety of backgrounds, abilities and needs. We offer a formal tutoring center as well as a casual math community center where students are encouraged to get together and mentor one another. The minor in statistics is beneficial for students majoring in a variety of disciplines such as physics, engineering applications, business, economics, the life and social sciences or to any field where there is a need for quantification in the analysis of phenomena.

taken as a sign of bankruptcy of mathematical methods in the social sciences tout court. This chapter surveys mathematical and statistical methods used in the social sciences and discusses some of their philosophical questions. It is divided into two parts. Sections 1 to 3 are devoted to mathematical methods, and Sections 4 to 8 to statistical. To help keep the MMSS community -- current students, prospective students and graduates -- informed, we initiated an annual newsletter, with a focus on recent events and activities in the MMSS Program.
